A Record-Breaking Career
Tendulkar is often regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He holds a plethora of records that will be very hard to match by the next generation of cricketers. He holds the record for the most centuries in Tests, and is the only batsman to score 50 hundreds in the format. He also tops the charts for most runs in the format. With a stunning 1,894 runs and nine centuries in 1998, Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs and centuries scored in a calendar year in the format, a feat that still stands.
In ODIs, Tendulkar held the record of most centuries for over a decade before Virat Kohli leapfrogged him; however, his record of 18,426 runs in the format is unlikely to be broken ever. Overall, he is the only player in the world to score 100 international centuries, and still leads Virat Kohli, who has 85 hundreds, by 15 hundreds. Overall, he scored 34, 357 runs in international cricket, a feat that might take decades to overcome, or may never be broken again.
It’s not just the runs that make Tendulkar special, but the longevity too. Tendulkar played for 22 years, which included over 463 ODIs and over 200 Tests, and mostly remained injury-free apart from the tennis elbow injury during the 2003–2024 season. That in itself is a tremendous achievement.
Tendulkar also holds the highest number of Player of the Match awards (76), the most fifties in a career (264), the most nineties (28), and the most fours (4,076), across all formats.
