‘I’ll Leave Cricket…’: Mohammed Shami Drops Bombshell Amid Retirement Talks

'I'll leave cricket...': Mohammed Shami drops bombshell amid retirement talks

Mohammed Shami’s international career is over. This is something that many believe after the pacer’s continuous snubs across formats. Shami was one of the significant pillars of the Indian cricket team not so long ago, but he has fallen back in the queue. Injuries have hampered his comeback, but Shami’s recent performances in domestic cricket suggest that he is fit enough to play. In the 2025-2026 domestic season, he took 67 wickets across the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

His absence from the Indian team, for reasons best known to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has often been called out by fans, but it has not made the selection committee turn heads. They’ve maintained a clear stance that Shami’s fitness remains an obstacle in his comeback.

At 35, Shami might not have much cricket left and given the current scenario, where India seemed to have moved on from the pacer, did retirement thoughts cross his mind? When asked the question, Shami gave a straightforward reply that he is not thinking about retirement. The pacer will turn up for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2026, and this could be a big opportunity for him to draw the selectors’ eyeballs.

“When I get tired, I will call it a day. But I am not even thinking of retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down. If this thought crosses your mind, it means you’re already tired. And if you’re tired, it means you’re bored. And I have said this earlier, too. I’ll leave cricket the day I wake up and decide to get bored. So yeah, the day I feel lazy or get bored, I’ll leave. But Neither am I bored nor am I enjoying,” Shami said on The Shubhankar Mishra Show.

‘I’ll Give My All’: Shami Keen To Justify LSG Trust

Shami was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 10 crores in IPL 2025, but he had a disappointing season and was traded to LSG. His priority now remains to give the best for the franchise.

“As a bowler, I will give my 100 per cent. I’ll perform my responsibilities and try to meet the expectations set for me. Rest, I can’t change my luck. All I can contribute is with my attitude and determination. If Lucknow has trusted me, I will give my all. Still, whenever you’re playing, the main element is satisfaction. Will I get the returns based on all the preparations that I have gone through? I did not focus on how much domestic I’ve played, but on the fact that my rhythm is alright. If that’s the point, I start thinking about the future,” he mentioned.
