Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their first match of the IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by a margin of 6 wickets and five balls to spare. This was a momentous win for MI, as they won their opening game of the IPL for the first time in 14 years. This big win for MI at the start of the season has caused them to rise in the IPL points table.
Mumbai Indians, despite their big win, remain just second on the points table, with two points from their single game and a Net Run Rate of +0.687. Despite their big loss, KKR remain fourth on the points table, with a Net Run Rate of -0.687.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) remain on top of the points table with 2 points and a huge Net Run Rate of +2.907 after their massive win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
MI Defeat KKR By 6 Wickets
After being put into bat first, KKR got off to a flying start with Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane putting up a 69-run stand. Allen departed after a quick-fire 37 from 17 balls.
KKR were in good momentum, but a few good overs in the middle from MI checked the run-flow. The batting team got some momentum in the end following a late surge from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh. They ultimately scored 220/4 at the end of their 20 overs.
Ajinkya Rahane was the top scorer with 67 runs, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi struck 51. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for MI as he picked up three wickets.
Mumbai Indians got off to a fantastic starts, as the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton smashed 148 for the opening wicket. Rohit, in particular looked fantastic, as he scored 78 runs from 38 balls. Rickleton went on to smash 81 from 43 deliveries.
It was this stupendous opening stand that guided Mumbai Indians to big win, despite a minor stutter in the middle, that saw the KKR bowlers restricting some runs and taking a few quick wickets.
