Patrick Mouratoglou , the renowned coach of Serena Williams and founder of the Mouratoglou Academy, has urged the tennis community to evolve in response to the rapid global rise of pickleball, warning that the sport risks losing relevance if it fails to adapt to changing audience expectations and participation trends.
Patrick Mouratoglou Speaks
Speaking on his own Instagram page, Patrick Mouratoglou highlighted how tennis is already being affected by shifting dynamics within racquet sports. “Will tennis change if we don’t change anything? It already is,” he said, underlining the urgency of reform.

While stopping short of declaring a crisis, Mouratoglou made it clear that tennis faces increasing pressure if it fails to adapt. “Tennis could be in deep trouble” if it does not address its challenges, he added, echoing concerns he has raised in the past.
“Pickleball as a major factor behind this shift, describing its rapid growth as a significant development in the global racquet sports landscape,” he added.
Pickleball’s appeal, according to Patrick Mouratoglou observations, lies in its accessibility and ease of play. “The sport allows beginners to rally quickly, requires less space and equipment, and has attracted a diverse player base ranging from recreational players to competitive athletes.”
“The rise of professional leagues and digital-friendly formats has further boosted its popularity, with shorter matches and engaging rallies making it well-suited for modern audiences,” he added.
“Younger players are increasingly gravitating toward pickleball. The quicker learning curve and immediate sense of competitiveness, compared to tennis, are influencing early sporting choices among juniors,” he pointed out.
“The issue is not about replacing tennis but about keeping it relevant,” he added. His comments reflect a broader concern within the sport about evolving formats, audience engagement, and accessibility.

Patrick Mouratoglou History
Patrick Mouratoglou has previously advocated for innovation in tennis through initiatives such as the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), which introduced shorter formats and fan-focused presentation.
His latest remarks underline the urgency of those changes, as pickleball continues to grow in popularity, particularly in the United States, where it has emerged as a major disruptor in the racquet sports ecosystem.
“Tennis is already changing,” Patrick Mouratoglou reiterated, suggesting that inaction could accelerate that shift further.
