Hans Niemann has attacked American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura over his views on Netflix’s latest documentary on the controversial rivalry between Magnus Carlsen and Niemann. The 22-year-old’s explosive reactions come on the backdrop of Nakamura admitting that he is not keen on watching the doc or the online reaction around it.
“Well, I mean, I don’t know because I haven’t watched it. also haven’t been on social media, so I have no idea. I mean, I would say what I said before on my stream yesterday after my game, which is from what I’ve heard about it, they don’t really delve too much into the behind-the-scenes of how everything transpire before the event, which is very disappointing,” he told ChessBase India.
Niemann responded on
“Notice how neither Magnus or Hikaru have said they won’t watch the doc. They don’t want to publicize their lies and deception,” he pointed out.
Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann’s rivalry stems from the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, when the Norwegian reportedly accused his American rival of cheating and dropped out of the tournament. What followed was a series of accusations, including a lawsuit filed by Niemann against Carlsen. Later, both parties agreed to move forward after the matter was settled in court.
Fast forward to 2026, and once again, the war of words seems to have erupted between the two before the release of Netflix’s Untold: Chess Mates, with both players offering candid insights into their past encounters. Newly released clips from the documentary, which premiered on April 7, revisit the controversy that rocked the chess world.
