‘One of the Worst Games’: Emiliano Martinez on Argentina’s Performance Against Mauritania

'one of the worst games': emiliano martinez on argentina's performance against mauritania

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez did not hold back following his team’s 2-1 victory over Mauritania, calling it “one of the worst games we’ve played, even for a friendly.” Speaking candidly after the match, Martínez laid bare his frustration with his teammates’ lack of intensity and cohesion.

“Pretty poor. It was one of the worst games we’ve played, even for a friendly. We lacked heart, thank goodness we weren’t playing the Finalissima like this. We lacked play and speed. We need a bit more heart. We lacked intensity, defensive solidity, and conviction when defending,” Martinez said.

Martinez’s pointed reference to the Finalissima comes after Argentina’s scheduled exhibition match against Spain was canceled due to escalating conflict in the Middle East. The ongoing war, triggered by United States and Israeli airstrikes on Iran and subsequent Iranian missile and drone attacks on American bases across the region, cast doubt over the game at Lusail Stadium in Doha and ultimately led UEFA to call off the fixture.

UEFA explained that despite numerous attempts to reschedule the match at alternative locations, no agreement could be reached. “Multiple options were put in front of the Argentine Football Association, including a 50-50 split of fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, but most of the options provided were refused for various reasons,” UEFA said. They added that a neutral venue was offered to Argentina, which was also declined. Other proposals, including dates after the World Cup and March 31, proved unworkable due to Spain’s scheduling conflicts.

On the pitch, Argentina looked confident in the first half, with early strikes from Enzo Fernandez and Nico Paz in the 17th and 31st minutes giving them a solid lead. However, the defending world champions struggled to maintain momentum in the second half, even after Lionel Messi entered the game from the bench. Mauritania, ranked 115th globally, pulled one back through Jordan Lefort, leaving the match at a narrow 2-1 finish.

Martinez’s remarks underscore concerns over Argentina’s consistency and readiness, especially ahead of more competitive fixtures. His candid assessment highlights a need for sharper defensive organization, higher intensity, and stronger conviction on the field.

Despite the win, the match served as a wake-up call for the reigning world champions, showing that even against lower-ranked opponents, lapses in focus and intensity can lead to challenging moments. For Martinez, the message is clear: Argentina must raise their level if they hope to compete at the highest international stage.
