'Interest has increased': Organizer Mukta Singh on growing pickleball base in Indore

The Surya Pickleball Tournament in Indore drew strong participation, with 90 players competing across 18 categories in the three-day Indian Pickleball Association-sanctioned PWR 100 event held at the Surya Pickleball Academy. The tournament, which began on March 27, marked a significant step for the sport in the city, as it brought together young players, first-time participants and dignitaries under one platform.

Organizing member Mukta Singh, who played a key role in conducting the event, highlighted the efforts made to increase participation, especially among new players. She explained that initial hesitation existed due to registration requirements, but a targeted approach helped address the issue.

“People were reluctant to participate because they needed to be affiliated with the association first. Our organizing secretary and MPPA board member Suryansh Yadav came up with a scheme to encourage entries,” Singh told Pickleball Now.

She said the organizers introduced a support system to reduce the financial burden on participants, which led to a rise in registrations.

“If players gave three or more entries, we bore the cost of registration. Surya Pickleball Academy covered those expenses, and because of this, we received more entries and children showed interest,” she said.

The response from participants, particularly young players, remained a key highlight of the tournament. Singh noted that the feedback had been positive, with many expressing interest in competing more regularly.

“They are enjoying and asking us to organize more tournaments like this. They are getting to see good competition and are happy to see themselves improving,” she said.

The event not only provided match experience but also created a competitive environment for emerging players in the region. With increased participation and encouraging feedback, Singh said the organizers expected even greater turnout in future editions.

As pickleball continued to grow in Indore, initiatives like these have started to build a stronger grassroots base, offering young players both exposure and opportunity in a structured competitive setting.
