Mumbai Indians (MI) know their form smply has not been up to the mark in IPL 2026, and their skipper Hardik Pandya admitted his side needs to introspect and build momentum after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday. MI simply haven’t been able to set the tempo and is instead playing catch-up. But their early-season struggles expose deeper issues within the five-time champions’ unit.
Mumbai Indians: Bumrah Crisis
“I think we conceded way too many (runs) as well. I think that was always going to be catch-up,” said Pandya after MI’s third loss of the season, which saw them slump to eighth on the points table. Much of that is because their talisman, Jasprit Bumrah, has not been firing. Against RCB, his economy of 8.75 stood out in an attack that conceded at 12 runs per over. From the other end, is Trent Boult, who too has been woefully out of sorts, picking up just one wicket so far. Hence, there is a lack of pressure from both ends. “It would be unfair to blame Bumrah for the lack of wickets. It’s a team game,” pointed out Ravichandran Ashwin, summing it up on his YouTube show.
Mumbai Indians: Concerned Issues
Stats by Cricbuzz prove the point as the Mumbai Indians’ bowling has the worst strike rate (29 percent), worst economy (11.13), and the lowest dot-ball percentage. But there are several other layers to it. For example, the lack of early breakthroughs, poor death bowling, and the failure to control big overs.
While much of the focus has been on the bowlers, MI’s batting unit has also failed to consistently control games. Among the four T20 World Winners, Suryakumar Yadav has scored just 106 runs so far. Hardik Pandya’s tally stands at 67, Tilak Verma at 35.
Mumbai Indians face the Punjab Kings in their next match, but with three losses in four games, the margin for error is shrinking steadily.
