The race to qualify for the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour Finals is entering its final stage, with the 2026 Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships set to decide the remaining spots. According to a report by forbes.com, the Atlanta event marks the last opportunity for players to secure qualification before the Tour Finals in San Clemente in mid-May.
This season has seen structural changes, with the PPA aligning its calendar with Major League Pickleball and introducing a revised ranking system based on players’ top 16 results. Qualification is determined by “The Race” standings, with the top eight singles players, top eight mixed players and top 16 players in each doubles category making the cut.
In men’s singles, the field appears largely settled, with minimal movement expected. Players on the edge face a steep challenge, with significant points gaps making late breakthroughs unlikely. Notably, former dominant names have dropped out of contention, underlining the volatility of the division.
Women’s singles has one final spot still open, with Judit Castillo currently leading the race. Challengers would need deep runs in Atlanta to displace her, making the final qualification scenario difficult but still mathematically possible.
Men’s doubles is effectively locked, with a clear points gap separating the top 16 from those outside. Even strong performances in Atlanta are unlikely to disrupt the standings, suggesting a stable finals lineup.
Similarly, the women’s doubles category appears largely settled, with only marginal changes possible. A few players outside the qualification zone would require standout results to break into the top 16.
Mixed doubles remains one of the few areas with some uncertainty. While most positions are secure, the final spot in the women’s mixed rankings is still contested, with players needing strong performances in Atlanta to seal qualification.
The Atlanta event therefore carries high stakes, particularly for those on the fringes of qualification. With only one tournament left, the margin for error is minimal, and any deep run could prove decisive.
As the PPA season reaches its conclusion, the Tour Finals promise to showcase a mix of established stars and emerging talents, reflecting the rapid evolution and growing competitiveness of professional pickleball.
Pickleball Popularity
Pickleball is popular because it is easy to learn, accessible, fun for socialising, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Since the pandemic, more people have taken up the sport. The United States leads the pickleball mania with a 263.5% increase in players since 2014 and an 85.7% annual growth since the pandemic began. As a result, the demand for pickleball courts has surged, leading to the conversion of existing tennis courts into pickle courts. This is feasible since one tennis court can be converted into almost three pickleball courts. Cities are also building new pickleball facilities, and the number of public pickleball courts in the 100 largest cities in the US has increased sixfold since 2017. Yet cities are still struggling to meet demand.
