Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have equaled MS Dhoni’s record and become the joint-most capped players in IPL. The former IPL captains achieved this milestone in the IPL 2026 match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rohit and Kohli made their IPL debuts in 2008 and have been playing in IPL regularly since then. Dhoni hasn’t played a fixture in IPL 2026. He is out of action due to a calf injury.

MS Dhoni shares the top spot with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Dhoni has played 278 IPL matches so far. The IPL legend has been a regular in the T20 league since his debut. Though he isn’t playing the ongoing season due to a calf strain. There is no official update on Dhoni’s return date.
MS Dhoni also played for Rising Pune Supergiant
MS Dhoni represented Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL 2016 and 2017. He captained the Pune-based team in its debut IPL seaon in 2016. He played under Steve Smith’s captaincy in 2017. RPS ended up as the runners-up of IPL 2017 after losing to Mumbai Indians in the final.
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli shares the top spot with MS Dhoni. The former RCB captain has played 278 games. Kohli is the only played in the league’s history to play for only one franchise in every season played thus far. With 9040 runs, Kohli is IPL’s highest run-scorer.
Rohit Sharma also on top
Rohit Sharma has also played 278 games and shares the top spot with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. He has been part of the league since its inception and has missed a handful of games. Rohit captained Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL title wins before being sacked.
Rohit Sharma also played for Deccan Chargers
Rohit Sharma kicked off his IPL career with Deccan Chargers and played for them from IPL 2008 to 2010. DC released him before the IPL 2011 mega-auction. They tried to re-sign Rohit in the auction but missed out.
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja has played 265 games and sits in the second spot. He started his career with Rajasthan Royals and later went on to play for Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Gujarat Lions. CSK shockingly traded Jadeja to RR before the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

Dinesh Karthik was a regular in IPL from 2008 till his retirement in 2025. The former KKR captain played Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians. He now works as RCB’s batting coach and mentor.
