Jannik Sinner created history and set a massive world record after continuing his dream run of form by reaching the semifinals of the Italian Open. The 24-year-old defeated Russian star Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinal of the event on Thursday (May 14) at the Center Court of the iconic Foro Italico in Rome.
The Italian won the fixture in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4, in a game that lasted 1 hour and 31 minutes. The local favorite is yet to drop a set in the tournament, with straight-set victories in the round of 64, 32, and 16 before today’s game.
Jannik Sinner Creates History
The victory marked Sinner’s 32nd consecutive win in an ATP Masters 1000 event. This is now a world record for the most wins since the format was introduced in 1990. Novak Djokovic had held the record since the 2011 season. The Serbian had over 30 wins twice in history. Roger Federer has the fourth-longest winning streak.
Longest Winning Streak In ATP Masters 1000 Events
| player | Matches won | period |
| Jannik Sinner | 32 | 2025 Paris Open 2nd Round To Ongoing |
| Novak Djokovic | 31 | 2011 India Wells Open 2nd Round To 2011 Cincinnati Open Final (lost to Andy Murray) |
| Novak Djokovic | 30 | 2014 Paris Open 2nd Round to 2015 Montreal Open final (lost to Andy Murray) |
| Roger Federer | 29 | Hamburg Open 2005 1st Round To 2006 Monte Carlo Open Final (lost to Rafael Nadal) |
Meanwhile, Sinner has now started the season with 27 victories in a row. It is the second-longest winning streak at the start of a season in ATP 1000 Masters events. Only Djokovic (31 wins) is ahead of him in the elite list.
The World No. 4 is only the second player in history to reach the semi-finals of each of the first five ATP Masters 1000 events in a year. The feat had previously been achieved only by Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard achieved the remarkable feat twice in his career, in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
As far as Sinner is concerned, his incredible run started in last year’s Paris Masters, which he won without dropping a set. Later, he also completed the Sunshine Double by winning both the Indian Wells and Miami Open by winning all the sets he played. This run saw him claim the record for the most consecutive sets won in ATP Masters 1000 events, which also previously belonged to Djokovic.
He has had a remarkable clay court season with victories in both the Monte Carlo and Madrid Opens before reaching Rome.
He has won each of the last five ATP Masters 1000 titles, which is a record. No one had previously won more than four competitions in a row. Meanwhile, he has also lifted the trophy in each of the first four events of the year, which was also done before.
Victory in Rome will see Sinner extend both records with a sixth consecutive title win. Quite incredibly, he has won 64 of the last 66 sets he has played at this level.
