For The First Time In 25 Years, Kolkata Derby Is Once Again Bigger Than Football

For the first time in 25 years, Kolkata derby is once again bigger than football.

For the first time in nearly a century, El Clasico carried direct title-deciding stakes in La Liga this season. Indian football now finds itself approaching a similarly rare moment. For the first time in 25 years, Sunday’s Kolkata Derby could directly shape the destiny of the national league title, reviving memories of one of the fiercest championship battles in Indian football history.

Regardless of changing formats, leagues, ownership models or eras, there remains one undeniable truth in Indian football, there is nothing quite like the Kolkata Derby.

The last time the rivalry truly decided the country’s top-flight league championship came during the 2000–01 National Football League season, when East Bengal finished just one point ahead of Mohun Bagan to clinch the title in dramatic fashion.

A quarter of a century later, history has circled back.

With both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan entering Sunday’s clash with two matches remaining, the title equation has once again narrowed around Kolkata’s two biggest clubs. Mumbai City remain mathematically alive after their recent victory, but the advantage now clearly lies with the city rivals because of their games in hand.

The current permutations mean whichever side wins the Derby could take a decisive step towards the title, potentially needing only a single point from the final round of matches depending on other results.

Mumbai’s remaining fixture against Punjab has further complicated the race, with Punjab themselves still capable of climbing significantly in the standings.

ISL Derby Record Favors Mohun Bagan

Despite the balance in the current title race, the Kolkata Derby in the ISL era has largely belonged to Mohun Bagan.

Across 10 meetings between the two sides in the competition, the Mariners have won nine times, while East Bengal are still searching for their first ISL derby victory. The remaining encounter ended in a draw.

Mohun Bagan have also dominated the fixture statistically, scoring 23 goals compared to East Bengal’s five across those meetings. The latest chapter came on January 11, 2025, when Mohun Bagan secured a narrow 1-0 victory.

That record adds another compelling layer to Sunday’s encounter.

If East Bengal are to place one hand on the ISL trophy on derby day itself, they will have to achieve something they have never managed before in the competition — defeat Mohun Bagan in an ISL Derby.

Political Shift Adds New Context To The Derby

Beyond football, the fixture also arrives at a moment of wider transition in Bengal. For the first time in decades, the Kolkata Derby will be played under a new political setup in the state after the BJP came to power in Bengal following years of political continuity under the previous administration.

Football and politics have historically remained deeply intertwined in Kolkata, from institutional influence and club patronage to crowd identity and cultural symbolism.

That backdrop adds another layer to an already emotionally charged occasion.

Bruzon Confident Despite Mohun Bagan’s Edge

On paper, Mohun Bagan may still appear stronger because of their squad depth and overall balance. But East Bengal’s recent performances have significantly shifted the mood around the title race.

Their dramatic 3-3 comeback against Bengaluru despite being reduced to 10 men is increasingly viewed as a turning point in their season. Even in the recent draw against Punjab, East Bengal finished the stronger side after an underwhelming first half.

East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon insisted his side are approaching the occasion with belief rather than fear, while also acknowledging Mohun Bagan’s status as defending champions. “We don’t take it as a responsibility. Probably in terms of responsibility, Mohun Bagan will have more tension because they need to defend the title. But we are having a dream. And when you have a dream, you can move mountains,” Bruzon said.

“If we need to talk about favourites, it’s clear that Mohun Bagan has the advantages. But if we need to talk about performance, which is our part, I’m cool, I’m confident, I’m determined, I’m excited, and I really believe that our guys tomorrow can play a good game, and we can take the three points with us,” he added.

Fine Margins Could Decide The Title Race

The numbers underline just how closely matched both teams have been this season. East Bengal possess the league’s best attacking record with 27 goals, while their tally of nine goals conceded is the joint third-best defensive return in the competition. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, have scored 20 goals, the second-highest tally in the league, while boasting the division’s strongest defense after conceding only seven times all season. Handling emotions may ultimately become decisive in a match carrying such enormous stakes.

East Bengal midfielder Mohammad Rashid stressed the importance of remaining mentally composed despite the atmosphere traditionally associated with the Derby.

“Any player looks to play these games because the atmosphere is just amazing. You look for those kind of games, and you look forward towards them,” Rashid said.

“You actually have to go in cool because if you press yourself and you’re nervous, then it becomes a problem. You have to work on yourself mentally for these kinds of games.”

Twenty-five years after the 2000–01 NFL season, the Kolkata Derby is no longer just about pride or bragging rights.

This time, it could decide the champions of India.
