The man who stood tall for the Iranians was goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who secured the Player of the Match award after frustrating a world-class Belgian attack. He had commanded his box, threw his body on the line, and pulled off seven crucial saves.

But for “The Wall of Persia,” shutting out some of the best players on the planet like Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku was arguably the easy part. Getting to the pitch in the first place was a miracle of human endurance.

A Nomadic Dream Denied

Alireza Beiranvand’s story begins far from the readymade pitches of elite European academies. He was born into a nomadic family in the mountainous Lorestan Province of Iran. In his childhood, he and his family constantly moved places, herding their sheep to find suitable pastures.

Being a footballer, however, was Beiranvand’s true dream and obsession. However, his father vehemently opposed this. The resistance wasn’t just verbal. His father reportedly tore up his football clothes and gloves to force him to abandon the sport. However, he continued to keep goals bare-handed, refusing to let the dream die.

Realizing he could not pursue football at his home, a teenage Alireza Beiranvand made a drastic choice. He borrowed money from a relative, ran away from home and boarded a bus to Tehran. He had no contacts, no money, and nowhere to live.

The Azadi Tower Years

Arriving in the sprawling capital city of Iran, Alireza Beiranvand faced the harsh realities of city life. He spent his nights sleeping without a roof over his head, around the iconic Azadi Tower, alongside other homeless individuals.

Eventually, he started sleeping directly outside the gates of his first football club so that he would not miss training in the morning. He was so impoverished that passersby would sometimes mistake him for a beggar, tossing coins at him while he slept.

To survive and fund his footballing ambitions, Alireza Beiranvand took on an several exhausting and odd jobs.

He worked in a dressmaking factory alongside his teammates to earn basic wages. He washed cars to make ends meet, famously once washing the SUV of Iranian football legend Ali Daei. Beiranvand recognized him but was too intimidated and proud to ask the icon for help.

He even worked night shifts at a pizza shop making dough. Je even took a job as a municipal street cleaner, sweeping the parks of Tehran.

Arriving On The Global Stage

‘s big break eventually came through the Iranian club system, leading to his national team debut in 2015. But it was the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia that turned the him into one of the biggest Iranian football stars on the planet.

In a group stage match against Portugal, Iran conceded a penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo, at the peak of his powers, stepped up to the spot. Beiranvand dove to his left, smothering the shot and instantly writing his name into Iranian football folklore. The 33-year-old veteran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand slowly transformed himself to the anchor of the impressive Iranian defence. Against some of Belgium’s world-class attackers, Beiranvand stood his ground like a brick wall. Every cross was claimed, every shot saved.

Against Belgium, he made seven saves, all inside the box. In fact his efforts resulted in resisting two goals from the Belgium side. His Player of the Match-winning performance was more than just an evening of brilliance on the field. It was a testament to the boy who slept on the concrete, washed cars, and swept streets that he too could persevere and reach the biggest stage of world football.
