La Tri shocked four-time winners Germany with a 2-1 victory in New York New Jersey Stadium in the USA on Friday, ensuring Ecuador’s survival in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Leroy Sane gave Germany the lead early in the crucial match, but goals from Angulo and Plata helped Ecuador make a remarkable comeback in the match. Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece jumped and climbed on to the stand to embrace his family after Plata finished La Tri’s comeback against the Mannaschaft.
Sebastian Beccacece’s Celebrations
Sebastian Beccacece marked the upset over Germany with an unforgettable World Cup celebration. As one of the top eight third-place team, La Tri’s 2-1 victory in New Jersey ensures their position in the round of 32. At the last whistle, manager Beccacece just went crazy. After celebrating with his staff in a huddle, he headed straight for the seats behind the dugout and started climbing the stand.
Beccacece scaled a barrier where his loved ones seemed to be seated, gave them a group hug, and held on to them tightly. While the Ecuadorian players celebrated together, fans in other parts of the MetLife were shedding happy tears, with some still displaying symptoms of utter shock. Chelsea star Moises Caicedo lay flat on his back before rising to his knees and pointed up into the sky.
Germany Take Early Lead
Despite the loss, Germany’s two victories over Curacao and Ivory Coast in their first two games helped them top Group E with six points.
Leroy Sane gave Germany the lead in just the second minute of the game. After a move that caused controversy because of Aleksandar Pavlovic’s lifted boot during the build-up, the winger composedly reached the back of the net. The four-time world champions gained an early lead as the referee upheld the goal in spite of the objections.
Ecuador’s Comeback
Ecuador reacted quickly, leveling the score in just seven minutes. La Tri regained parity with a fantastic long-range goal from Jhonny Angulo, who cut in from the left and past Manuel Neuer from outside the penalty area.
The teams were tied 1-1 going into halftime with everything still up for grabs in an important Group E match. Gonzalo Plata took advantage of a well-worked corner that was sent to the near post in the 77th minute, which proved to be the game-changing moment. The Ecuadorian supporters were ecstatic when Plata touched the ball before Neuer and poked it into the net.
Ecuador secured a historic victory over Germany by remaining resolute for the rest of the game. The outcome is the biggest upset of the competition thus far and guaranteed their spot in the knockout stages while maintaining their World Cup campaign. Germany nevertheless won Group E in spite of the loss.
