Known as one of India’s greatest ever sportspersons, Sania Mirza took to social media and expressed solidarity with the student protests taking place in India and called for reforms in the education system. The tennis legend’s comments came after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) was leaked and sparked massive outrage across the country.
Led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), protests have been held for a month at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. On Monday (July 20), the students marched towards the parliament over the issue while calling for the union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, to resign. Violence was reported as several civilians and police officers suffered injuries.
Mirza stated that there was a place for violence but called the concerns of the student ‘genuine’ while mentioning the hardwork they put up to prepare for exams like NEET while asking for respect towards their effort.
“This is to express solidarity with the genuine concerns of students who are the future of our country. Students spend years preparing for competitive exams such as NEET and my heart goes out to them for what they have endured especially in the last few days. Their voices deserve to be heard and their efforts respected. Their disenchantment must be addressed and proper reforms administered in the system. There is no place for violence in our society and we must all work together to find an amicable solution. that secures the future of our youth,” wrote Mirza on Instagram.
