South African swimmer Chad Le Clos created history during the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) after winning the 21st medal of his career in the games. He set an all-time record in the process as he was part of the South African team that won the bronze medal in the 4*100 relay event on Wednesday (July 29).
Clos has won three medals in the ongoing games in Glasgow, where the swimming event is taking place: silver in the mixed 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. This means he has a total of 21 medals in the history of the CWG.
He is participating in the event for the fourth time after making his debut in the 2010 edition in New Delhi. The 34-year-old has won seven gold medals, five silver medals, and nine bronze medals in the quadrennial games.
Chad Le Clos Creates History
Clos has now set the world record for the most medals won in the history of the CWG by an individual athlete. The record was previously held by Australian women swimmer Emma McKeon, who won 20 medals in the history of the competition.
