The contracts of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff are set to end after the ongoing series against England. While Gambhir was given a three-year contract, which runs till the 2027 ODI World Cup, Morne Morkel, Ryan ten Doeschate and T Dilip were given one-year contracts. Abhishek Nayar joined the team management along with them but he was sacked after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Apart from him, T Dilip was also removed. He made his return before the England tour in 2025 and was given a one-year contract.
PTI has reported that Dilip is unlikely to get an extension while Morkel and ten Doeschate would stay. Given India’s recent fielding slump, the update isn’t surprising at all.
India’s fielding standards have hit rock bottom in the ongoing UK tour and the fielders have dropped number of catches. The standards of ground fielding have also gone down, resulting in India leaking extra runs.
Ten Doeschate used to work as a fielding coach at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It remains to be seen whether India appoints a new fielding coach or will he be given an extra charge. He is the current assistant coach of India while Morkel serves as the bowling coach.
Review meeting after England tour
Meanwhile, the BCCI has confirmed that it will conduct a review meeting following the England tour. India suffered shocking series defeat against Ireland in the two-match T20I series. They lost the five-match T20I series against England 0-4.
“The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England. However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket. We consider it as a purely bad phase. Once the ODI series gets over on July 19 and the team comes back, we will have a review meeting with core members of the team to discuss what went wrong in England. Since there is an ODI series, we are hoping that the The team will be back in good form,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
“The review meeting will be strictly about the performance of the team and how course correction can be done with regards to shortfalls. Nothing else will be discussed,” he added.
