Thailand Open: Satwik-Chirag storm into semis, PV Sindhu bows out

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stormed into the semifinals of the Thailand Open at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 15, Friday. The top seeded duo registered a straight-game (21-12, 21-13) win over Japan’s Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami in the quarterfinals.

Satwik and Chirag, the country’s top men’s doubles pair, are currently chasing their first title in two years. Apparently, their last title came at the Thailand Open in 2024 which was their second title at the tournament.

The Indian duo took control of the match from the onset and dictated the pace and dominated the exchanges at the net as they made a lightwork of the Japanese pairing.

In the Round of 16, Satwik and Chirag registered an impressive victory over Malaysia’s Goonting Bryan Jeremy and Haikal Muhammad. Before that, they survived a stern opening-round test against Indonesia’s Muh Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana, edging through in a thrilling three-game battle that demanded patience, resilience and tactical clarity.

The tournament has often brought the best out of the Indian pair, and their magnificent performances this week have renewed hopes of another Thailand Open title, which could help them regain their rhythm in a year featuring major tournaments like the World Championships and the Asian Games.

However, it was the end of the road for the country’s star shuttler PV Sindhu in women’s singles category after she suffered a hard-fought defeat against World No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi. In a contest that lasted 61 minutes, Sindhu went down 19-21, 21-18, 15-21 after pushing the Japanese ace across three intensely fought games.

The two-time Olympic medalist showed glimpses of her vintage fighting spirit in the match. After losing the closely fought opening game, Sindhu bounced back strongly in the second to force the decider. However, the Japanese shuttler’s trademark consistency and retrieval skills eventually proved decisive in the final game.

Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, who remains India’s hope in the men’s singles draw, will go up against World No. 2 and local favorite Kunlavut Vitidsarn in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash.
