The Indian Football team’s first outing on English soil after 24 years ended in a defeat as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Jamaica in the semi-final of the 2026 Unity Cup at the iconic Valley Stadium in Charlton, which is based in the South East region of London. The Blue Tigers failed to qualify for the final and will now feature in the third-place match to end their tour of England.
The. Mein in Blue suffered an early blow as the Carribean nation took the lead in the 8th minute with a goal from Courtney Clarke. The 23-year-old scored through a beautiful finish in the top corner after a counter-attack. The two teams went into the half-time break with the Jamaican team leading 1-0.
While the 136th-ranked Indian team managed to keep itself alive in the game for a long time with a resolute display, the fight proved valiant as Kaheim Dixon scored in the 78th minute to double the Jamaican team’s lead, who are 71st in the FIFA rankings. The 21-year-old winger managed to find the back of the net at the home ground of his club, Charlton Athletic. He dribbled past Indian defenders and produced a fine finish.
The game also saw India being hit with a major injury blow as star forward Ryan Williams went off with an injury in the 58th minute of the game.
India To Face Zimbabwe
India will face Zimbabwe on Saturday (May 30) in the third-place off. The African nation lost its semi-final to continental rivals Nigeria in an all-African clash by a 2-0 margin. The India-Zimbabwe clash will also take place in Charlton and kick off at 7:00 PM IST. Meanwhile, the final will take place later that day at the Valley Stadium between Nigeria and Jamaica and start at 12:00 AM IST.
After returning from England, India will play two international friendlies (on June 5 and 9) against Tajikistan at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.
