The cameras caught a moving scene at the Eden Gardens after the excitement of the final over subsided. 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stayed on the field and sat on the boundary rope by himself while the Kolkata Knight Riders celebrated their maiden victory of the IPL 2026 season. The young opener was clearly struck with emotion and seemed to feel the weight of the close loss personally, even though the Rajasthan Royals had just suffered their second loss of the tournament and were still in a solid position in the top four.
The opposition was aware of the teen’s unhappiness. A member of the KKR support staff approached the young cricket player in a subdued act of sportsmanship that went beyond rivalry. As Sooryavanshi attempted to gather himself, the staff member sat next to him on the grass and offered a consoling hand and reassuring words. In a high-stakes league, it served as a realistic reminder of the human factor. The weight of a professional loss proved to be too much for a young boy.
The what-ifs of his own outstanding performance may have contributed to the tears. Sooryavanshi had batted brilliantly earlier in the evening on a wicket unsuitable for stroke-makers. Smashing 46 runs off just 28 balls, he faced the KKR attack in bold and fearless style. Vaibhav gave the team a strong start as the rest of the batting line struggled against the spin of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.
RR’s Batting Collapse After Sooryavanshi’s Departure
But his dismissal, which came just four runs shy of a milestone, set off a chain reaction that saw RR fall to 155. The young player’s anxiousness must have increased as he watched from the dugout while KKR’s middle order chipped away at the target, and as the winning runs were scored, it finally exploded.
The Royals chose to bat and scored 155/9 thanks to a brilliant start from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who hit 46 off 28 balls. By the 9th over, Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal (39) led RR to a dominant 81/0. The tide changed drastically when KKR’s spin combo, Varun Chakaravarthy (3/14) and Sunil Narine (2/26), stifled the scoring and caused a middle-order collapse.
KKR’s innings, which was chasing 156, got off to a terrible start, collapsing to 5/2 in the second over and then 85/6 as Ravindra Jadeja (2/8) placed tremendous pressure. Vice-captain Rinku Singh saved the day by anchoring the chase with a calm, undefeated 53 off 34 balls. Anukul Roy (29)* skillfully assisted him in a 76-run partnership that defined the game. Kartik Tyagi’s late three-wicket burst for RR did not stop KKR from crossing the finish line with two balls remaining.
The Rajasthan Royals, who had eight points from six games and were comfortably in third position on the points standings, just suffered their second defeat this season. With their first victory, KKR, on the other hand, finally rose off the bottom of the standings.
As for Sooryavanshi, he has currently scored 246 runs in 6 matches with an astonishing strike rate of 236.54. He is in the fourth spot in the Orange Cap race. On the other hand, his team, Rajasthan Royals are still standing firmly in the third spot in the IPL 2026 points table with 8 points. They are just behind Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the standings.
