Who is Alexandra Eala? Filipino Star Who Shocked Iga Swiatek At Wimbledon 2026

who is alexandra eala? filipino star who shocked iga swiatek at wimbledon 2026

Three years ago, Alexandra Eala stood on a stage at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, proudly receiving her graduation diploma from then World No. 1 and three-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek. On Saturday, July 4, the symbolic moment came full circle as the 20-year-old Filipino stunned the defending Wimbledon champion 7-6, 6-2 on Center Court, producing the biggest victory of her career to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon 2026.

The win marked a historic milestone for Eala, who continues to rewrite the record books for the Philippines while announcing herself as one of the sport’s brightest young stars.

Who is Eala?

Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Eala’s introduction to tennis was anything but conventional. She trained on a makeshift tennis court painted over a local basketball court, often adjusting her shots to avoid basketball hoops because proper grass courts were unavailable.

Athleticism runs in her family. Her mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, is a former competitive swimmer and Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist, while her brother, Miko, played collegiate tennis. Her late grandfather, Roberto, was the first person to coach her.

She made an impact in local tournaments soon. At just 13 years, after winning a tournament in France, Eala and her elder brother moved to Mallorca, Spain, where she earned a full-time scholarship at the Rafa Nadal Academy. There, she balanced academics with technical training, recovery sessions, and match play, gradually laying the foundation for a professional career.

Among the key figures guiding her has been Joan Bosch, one of the academy’s head coaches. Renowned for his work with former world No. 1 Carlos Moya and Spain’s 2004 Davis Cup-winning team, Bosch has traveled alongside Eala on tour, helping prepare her mentally for elite competition.

Stellar rise

Although she enjoyed an outstanding junior career, underlined by the 2022 US Open girls’ singles title, her breakthrough on the professional circuit arrived at the 2025 Miami Open. Competing as a 19-year-old wildcard ranked world No. 140, Eala reached the WTA 1000 semifinals after defeating Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, and registering her first victory over Swiatek.

She carried that momentum into the remainder of the season by reaching her maiden WTA singles final at the Eastbourne International and lifting her first WTA 125 title in Guadalajara. Those achievements propelled her into the WTA Top 50 and earned her a nomination for WTA Newcomer of the Year.

If 2025 offered a glimpse of her potential, the 2026 grass-court season has firmly established her among the game’s rising contenders. After reaching the Berlin Open semifinals, Eala became the first Filipino player to be seeded at a Grand Slam, entering Wimbledon as the No. 29 seed.

Her latest win over Swiatek made Eala the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam, drawing praise from tennis legend and childhood idol Maria Sharapova, who hailed her as “a star.”

Overcoming the emotion after the match, Eala said, “I don’t know how to describe it. I made it to the second week of the slam and it’s amazing for me.” Eala will face Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round on July 6.
