New Delhi. Indian star batsman Shreyas Iyer went to play for the new team in the new season of the Indian Premier League. This time, Punjab Kings have captained this Dhurandhar, who made Kolkata Knight Riders champion. On Tuesday (March 25), he made it to a special list with Ajinkya Rahane as he landed against Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Iyer has become only the fifth player to captain three teams in IPL history.

As soon as he landed in the first match of the tournament on Tuesday, he made it to the special list of veteran captains. Now Iyer has become Indians who captain 3 different teams in the IPL. Before captaining Punjab Kings in the IPL, Iyer has captained 41 IPL matches of Delhi Capitals in three seasons and 29 matches of KKR. He is the only captain in IPL history who has played the final with two teams.

Iyer became 5th captain
So far, there have been a total of four players in the Indian Premier League who have got a chance to captain three different teams. Apart from Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka, Steve Smith of Australia and Ajinkya Rahane of India have done this feat. Sangakkara captained Punjab Kings in 13 matches in the 2010 season, Deccan Chargers in 25 matches and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 9 matches in the 2013 season.

Former Australian captain Smith captained Pune Warriors India in a match in IPL 2012, Rajasthan Royals in 27 matches and Rising Pune Supergiants in 15 matches. On the other hand, Jayawardene had captained Punjab Kings in a match in IPL 2010, Kochi Tuskers in 13 matches in IPL 2011 and Delhi Capitals in 16 matches in IPL 2012 and 2013.

Rahane captained Rising Pune Supergiants in a match in IPL 2017 and captained Rajasthan Royals in 24 matches in two seasons of 2018 and 2019. He played his first match as KKR captain against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens on Saturday (22 March).
