Ben Johns Explains Pickleball’s Secret Formula and Why It Is Exploding Worldwide

ben johns explains pickleball's secret formula and why it is exploding worldwide

Pickleball’s transformation from a niche pastime to a global sporting phenomenon has been driven by accessibility, affordability and its cross-generational appeal, according to leading voices in the sport.

“Pickleball has a lot working in its favor,” said Ben Johns, speaking in a report by WSJ. “It started with a stigma—as a sport for older people—but over the last five years or so, it’s transformed into a sport for everyone.”

“You can play on old tennis courts, the equipment isn’t expensive and it’s a great family game: I’ve seen five-year-olds playing with 90-year-olds, and everyone’s having a ball,” he added.

“It’s cross-generational, and you end up playing with people you’d never normally meet.”

Johns also pointed to the sport’s global expansion as a key factor.

“The sport’s also become more international, with investments in global tours accelerating that growth. Pickleball has been on an incredible run in a short amount of time, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping.”

Echoing the sentiment, Connor Pardoe highlighted three core drivers behind pickleball’s rise.

“I always come back to three things: ease of play, accessibility and cost,” he said.

“First, as Ben said, the barrier to entry is very low. For those who’ve never been athletic, pickleball is something they can actually do; for people who have been competitive before, it gives them that outlet again.”

“You can instantly get out there, rally a few balls and think, ‘I’m actually pretty good at this, and I can get better.’”

Pardoe also underlined the sport’s adaptability to different environments.

“You can also fit far more people on a pickleball court than on a tennis court, and you can put courts almost anywhere. Internationally, where space is tighter, that’s a huge reason we’re seeing the sport explode.”

“And lastly, affordability. Courts are widely available and getting started doesn’t require a big investment.”

With its low barriers and growing global footprint, pickleball’s rise shows little sign of slowing, as it continues to draw players across age groups and geographies.
