EXPLAINED: Mari Humberg Debunks Myths Around Flick Shots in Women’s Game

explained: mari humberg debunks myths around flick shots in women's game

Professional pickleball player Mari Humberg offered a detailed perspective on the evolving dynamics of women’s pickleball, shedding light on why flick shots are less frequently seen in the game while addressing long-standing misconceptions around strength, technique, and shot execution at the highest level.

Breaking down the dynamics, Humberg pointed to the early adoption of the two-handed backhand among women as a key factor. “Women have incorporated the two-hander more than men early on, and I think it’s just something that limits your reach,” she said, explaining that the grip reduces extension and makes flick execution more challenging.

She also highlighted court positioning as another reason behind the trend. “Women play off the line more, so you just don’t see it as much,” Humberg noted, adding that staying further from the kitchen limits opportunities to attempt flicks.

However, the pattern is beginning to change. “Now you’re seeing girls’ kind of sneak up, you’re seeing a lot more movement of up and back than we used to,” she said, pointing to a shift in playing styles that could bring the shot into play more often.

Addressing a common misconception, Humberg was clear that strength is not the issue. “It’s not a power problem, it requires wrist strength,” she said, emphasizing that technique and control are far more important than raw power.

Despite dealing with wrist issues herself, she maintained that the shot is achievable with practice. “It’s just something that requires a little bit more practice and feel, not impossible for women at all,” Humberg concluded.

Her insights reflect a broader evolution in women’s pickleball, where improved movement and tactical awareness are gradually expanding the range of shots used on court.
