Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut has become the latest veteran player to retire from men’s singles tennis. Bautista Agut confirmed that the 2026 season will be his last on the professional circuit. The announcement places him alongside established names like Stan Wawrinka, Gael Monfils, and David Goffin, who are also approaching the closing stages of their careers.
Bautista Agut, a model of consistency on the ATP Tour for over a decade, made the announcement in an emotional social media post on X.

“There are decisions that aren’t easy, but they come from tranquility and the heart: the 2026 season will be my last as a professional tennis player,” he said.
“I’ve lived my dream for many years. I’ve given everything I had in every training session and every match. Now I feel the time has come to start saying goodbye, to enjoy each tournament in a different way, and to close this chapter with gratitude for my beloved tennis.
“I want to live every last point this year. To feel the support of the people, to compete one more time in the tournaments that have been a part of my life, and to say goodbye on the court, which is where I’ve always been happiest.
“Thank you to my family, my team, my friends, my sponsors, and everyone who has been there for me during these years. And thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all the fans who have supported me every step of the way.”
Declining form
At 38, the Spaniard’s decision does not come entirely as a surprise. His recent form has dipped, with Bautista Agut managing only three ATP Tour main draw wins this season, and his ranking trajectory indicating a slide out of the world’s top 100.
Despite the recent struggles, his career remains one of the most respected among his generation. Known for his discipline and baseline consistency, Bautista Agut reached a career-high ranking of world No. 9 in 2019, a year that also marked his standout run at Wimbledon Championships.
That campaign at the All England Club produced one of the more memorable personal anecdotes of his career. Few had predicted his deep run into the second week, and even Bautista Agut himself had not anticipated it, having initially planned a stag celebration in Ibiza during the same period. The plans were ultimately postponed as he advanced to the semi-finals, where he faced Novak Djokovic. Though he fell short of reaching the final, his performance left a lasting impression on Center Court.

Over the course of his career, Bautista Agut captured 12 ATP titles and played a key role in Spain’s Davis Cup triumph. He also reached the final of the Shanghai Masters in 2016, finishing runner-up to Andy Murray.
As he enters the final phase of his career, Bautista Agut is expected to savor each remaining appearance on tour. His immediate focus shifts to the upcoming Madrid Open, where he will compete in front of home fans, adding another emotional layer to what promises to be a farewell season defined by reflection and appreciation.
