Rising young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finds himself in a troublesome spot after the controversial altercation. The tri-nation series for India A was meant to provide the ideal prelude to the visit to Ireland. Instead, after Sri Lanka A defeated India A in a Super Over in the one-day tri-series on Tuesday, the young prodigy got into a furious on-field argument with a rival player that even turned into a little physical altercation. Tensions erupted after a thrilling match in Dambulla on Monday between Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage and India’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
As the light faded, Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella intervened to keep the players apart and diffuse the tension. It will be interesting to see if Pradeep Jeyapragash, the match referee, issues an official sanction or simply issues a warning to the players.
What Does The ICC Rule Say?
Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct relates to: “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”
According to the rule: “Any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another player or umpire.
“When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (ie intentional), reckless, negligent and/or avoidable; (ii) the force of the contact; (iii) any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made; and (iv) the person with whom contact was made.”
Sri Lanka A Beat India A In Super Over
After 50 overs, the match was tied, necessitating a Super Over to decide the winner. In the tie-breaker, Sri Lanka A scored 16 runs, putting pressure on India A. India A only managed nine runs in response as debutant pacer Kugathas Mathulan, whose slingy action has been compared to Matheesha Pathirana, put on a calm display to deny Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge and secure victory for the home team.
Earlier, India A forced their way back into the competition with an incredible comeback. Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam created an incredible 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket when the team was struggling at 143/7. This helped India A to a competitive total of 265 and set the stage for an exciting finish.
Sadeera Samarawickrama led Sri Lanka A in reply with a calm 93, and his innings made sure the hosts maintained control of the chase for the most part. But Arshad Khan’s brilliant final over helped India stage a late comeback, bringing the match to an exciting conclusion and putting Sri Lanka within touching distance of defeat.
Tensions erupted on the pitch as a result of the chaotic end that followed. But in the end, Sri Lanka A won the Super Over and came out with two points, virtually guaranteeing them a spot in the final.
After a previous rain-shortened encounter against Afghanistan, which they lost by four runs using the DLS technique, this is India A’s second defeat in three games.
The team, captained by Tilak Varma, had defeated the same Sri Lanka A team in another low-scoring thriller to begin their campaign.
