Shreyas Iyer-led India bounced back strongly after the series defeats against Ireland and England and the visiting team whitewashed Zimbabwe in the three-match ODI series. The Men in Blue completed the series win with a big 90-run win on Saturday (July 25) and they crushed the hosts by winning the third game as well. It was a total domination for India, who didn’t let Zimbabwe even think about a win. Before the series, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza was confident that his team could challenge India but that didn’t happen.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Iyer gave his first reaction after the series win and he seemed to be elated with the team’s fearless approach. “As we saw how fearless they are, they are a young bunch of players who have been showing tremendous energy on the field and the intent, especially when you play back-to-back games. To have such kind of energy is what I require as a captain and as a team, and they could deliver today as well, back-to-back games. So, yeah, a special feeling for me to win the series over here in Zimbabwe,” Iyer said.
“Clinical, 3-0. So it’s going to be a special moment. I think if you see the record, I’ve played almost a similar amount of matches compared to all of them, which is around 55 to 60. So, I mean, experience-wise, there are many players who have tremendous experience because nowadays they play in the IPL as well. So, yeah, they are special talent and the best you could get out of them, it’s beneficial for the team. as well. So every time I step onto the field, I see to it how I can make sure that they are comfortable and relaxed because that’s when you can get the best out of them,” he added.
India’s T20I players will now have a rest for more than a month. They will make their on-field return in the Asian Games. Iyer will be leading a strong squad, that will be bolstered by Jasprit Bumrah’s return.
India’s performance in the series
India kicked off the series by chasing down the target of 126 in the series opener. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shone in the series opener and he slammed 50 off just 19 balls. India put on a huge total of 219 on the board in the second game and bowled out Zimbabwe for 129 to register a 90-run win. India put on a total of 192 on the board and restricted Zimbabwe to 157 to register a 35-run win.
