Argentina Chases World Cup History And Doctors Battle Surge In Heart Attack Cases

argentina chases world cup history, and doctors battle a surge in heart attack cases

Argentina has given their fans plenty to cheer with a stunning run to the final at the FIFA World Cup, and is just a win away from a historic fourth World title. But none of Argentina’s games has been straightforward, with the defending champions trailing in most knockout games before coming back from behind to win. The football fans are so attached to the sport that such games can often trigger significant health concerns, something that was seen in Argentina during the FIFA World Cup.

According to Argentine doctor Alan Sigal, the hospitals are seeing a surge in patients, with stress-related cardiac issues after the games.

“Many people come in after the match carrying a lot of emotion. We see a lot of palpitations, a lot of chest pain, high blood pressure, some arrhythmias, and all of that is very directly linked to the strong emotions experienced during the match,” Sigal said in a video shared by Reuters.

His remarks come days after health authorities in Argentina’s Tucuman province reported an alarming spike in cardiovascular emergencies following Argentina’s thrilling win over England. The team was down and out till the 85th minute, with England ahead, but two goals in seven minutes sealed the Lionel Messi-led side’s berth in the final.

According to local newspaper La Gaceta, two people suffered heart attacks during the semifinal, taking the total number of heart attack cases in the province during the tournament to 35.

“During the match, the public healthcare system received more than 30 emergency calls related to chest pain, high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias,” the health minister of Tucumán, Luis Medina Ruiz, said.

He also revealed that one person suffered a cardiac arrest during consultation, but doctors were able to save him, transferring him to another hospital, where he underwent surgery and had two stents implanted.

“The match certainly had something to do with it because all the stress we go through, which fortunately ended well, also takes a toll on the heart,” he concluded.

The health experts have urged supporters, particularly those with underlying heart conditions, to monitor their health closely and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as chest pain, severe palpitations or difficulty breathing during matches.
