The decision to not travel to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup has come back to haunt Aminul Islam, as the new Bangladesh government has decided to ax him from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as they aim to amend ties with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal will take charge of an interim 11-member ad-hoc committee, which will be in place till the next elections.
Tamim will lead the new board, with 10 more members, namely Rashna Imam, Mirza Yasir Abbar, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khosru, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Athar Ali Khan, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam Babu, Fahim Sinha, Ahar Ali Khan.
The T20 World Cup Controversy
The move has come after a new government took charge in Bangladesh after the national elections in February. Under the purview of the previous Mohammed Younus-led interim government, the BCB pulled out of the T20 World Cup after ICC rejected their demand of moving their games to Sri Lanka from India. Following the BCCI’s decision to not allow Mustafizur Rahim to play the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Bangladesh cricket governing body decided to not travel to India.
New Sports Minister Aminul Haque had hinted at a change in BCB’s leadership last month after claiming that a decision will be taken following consultation with the ICC.
Bangladesh has taken major steps to improve their strained ties with India. They also removed the ban on broadcast of IPL 2026 matches in the country, which was imposed in January after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were asked to release Mustafizur.
