BCCI To Review Coach Gautam Gambhir’s Performance After Series Defeat To England | exclusive

India suffered a defeat to England in the fourth T20I to lose the series. This was the first time that India lost a 2+ match against England. It was also the first bilateral series defeat against England since 2019. The series of defeats has put coach Gautam Gambhir’s contract under scrutiny. Gambhir’s contract ends in 2027, but the recent defeats have triggered a wider performance review, not just of the batting unit, but also of the coaching setup.

Sources told Times Now that while there are no immediate alarm bells, the transition phase cannot become a permanent excuse for the defeats, adding that the captain and coach are now expected to show tangible progress in this format. Notably, Gambhir recently defended India’s performances in T20Is, insisting the team is undergoing a transition following significant changes to the squad.

“There are a lot of changes from the XI that played the T20 World Cup final to now. Be it the captain, be it the opening batsman. There is no Hardik Pandya, there is no Jasprit Bumrah,” he later pointed out.

“When you go for that reset, it takes a bit of time. If you see, a 15-year-old [Vaibhav Sooryavanshi] is opening, Prince Yadav is in his second T20I, and Harshit Rana is coming back from an injury. We ultimately look only at results, and no doubt results are important in international cricket, but we have to be practical as well,” he added.

Tilak Varma Needs To Perform To Keep His Place.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are under review following a lean run in the series. The board is not happy with the players trying to smash every ball for a six, which comes with a high risk-reward ratio. The board is also keeping a keen eye on Tilak Varma, who is also going through a bad run. The board wants Tilak to perform to retain his place in the team. The Indian team has already shown they don’t mind taking bold calls, having recently dropped former captain Suryakumar Yadav from the squad.
