A comment made by Michael Clarke during the Chennai Super Kings’ match against the Kolkata Knight Riders ended up garnering more attention than the actual game. Clarke called the dismissal of Ruturaj Gaikwad early in CSK’s innings a ‘big blow for KKR’. Given Gaikwad’s recent performance and the game’s backdrop, the comment immediately caught attention. Gaikwad, who has had trouble scoring runs this season, was removed for 7 off 6 balls after trying to slog sweep Anukul Roy. He continued a string of low returns in the tournament by picking out Rovman Powell at deep mid-wicket.
The irony that Gaikwad’s presence at the crease would have benefited KKR, given his inability to score runs fast this season, was the source of the humor. Fans pointed out the discrepancy between Clarke’s response and the anticipated impact of the wicket as soon as the comment became viral on the internet.
It gave a match that otherwise revealed KKR’s persistent problems a humorous undercurrent.
On a two-paced Chepauk surface, Chennai Super Kings easily defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 32 runs. After racing to 72 runs in the powerplay, CSK scored 192 for 5 until KKR’s spinners slowed them down in the middle overs.
The middle order’s contributions made sure CSK had enough on the board despite the slowdown. Meanwhile, KKR’s chase never really got going.
Left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad, who destroyed the middle order with 3 for 21 was the standout player for the five. As KKR fell from 79 for 2 to 90 for 6, he removed important hitters like Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, and Cameron Green.
With their innings failing against spin on a wicket that gave grip and variable pace, KKR ultimately finished on 160 for 7.
Although a clinical performance will give CSK confidence, it was Clarke’s casual comment that stuck in the minds of supporters and brought some unexpected humor to an otherwise one-sided match.
