Guwahati Open PWR 200: Veteran Spirit Shines As Barkakoti, Gopalan Crowned Champions

guwahati open pwr 200: veteran spirit shines as barkakoti, gopalan crowned champions

The Guwahati Open PWR 200 once again underlined pickleball’s unique ability to bring together generations, as veteran categories witnessed commanding performances and spirited competition, with Mridulal Barkakoti and Venkatachalam Gopalan emerging champions in the 60+ and 50+ men’s singles divisions respectively.

In the 60+ Men’s Singles category, Mridulal Barkakoti delivered a composed and assured display to defeat Tiken Chandra Basumatary 15-5 in the final. Combining patience with tactical awareness, Barkakoti controlled the pace of the contest and rarely allowed momentum to drift away. While younger divisions often thrive on speed and explosiveness, the veteran contest highlighted a different beauty of pickleball — anticipation, intelligent shot placement and calm execution under pressure.

Basumatary battled hard and showed moments of resilience, but Barkakoti’s consistency and command across the court ensured he remained firmly in control from start to finish.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s 50+ Singles category, Venkatachalam Gopalan emerged champion after a strong run in the tournament, overcoming Nicholas Jeffrey in the final to lift the title. Displaying composure and competitive sharpness, Gopalan showcased the blend of experience and discipline that often defines veteran pickleball.

Jeffrey, despite finishing runner-up, produced a commendable performance to reach the final and remained competitive through the event, reflecting the increasing depth of participation in senior divisions.

The veteran categories at the Guwahati Open served as another reminder that pickleball is not merely a young player’s sport. Instead, it continues to thrive because of its accessibility and inclusivity, offering athletes across age groups an opportunity to compete, stay active and embrace the joy of sport.

For Barkakoti and Gopalan, the trophies represented not just victories, but proof that passion for competition only deepens with time.
