The popularity of pickleball in Southeast Asia is all set to get another big boost with the creation of the Pickleball Freak Championship 2026, an international competition designed to attract players from across the region and beyond. The tournament is scheduled for June 26-28 at Star Pickleball in Kuching and aims to attract participation of over 1,300 players and pickleball enthusiasts to make it one of the biggest of its kind in the region.

The championship, organized by Precision Pickleball Club, will have a total prize fund of more than RM80,000 and is expected to attract participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and the United States.

According to tvsarawak.my, the event is a part of wider attempts to fast-track the growth of pickleball in Sarawak while marketing the state as an emerging sports tourist destination.

“The tournament has been designed to strengthen the local pickleball ecosystem while creating opportunities for players across different age groups and skill levels,” said Jason Tie Sin Wan, secretary of Precision Pickleball Club.

“The number of registrations has already reached nearly 50 percent of the target participation for the tournament, which reflects the growing popularity of the sport in Malaysia and internationally,” Tie said.”The tournament is to promote the rapid development of the sport of pickleball and also to strengthen the sports community in Sarawak,” Tie stated.“It will feature a range of competition categories to motivate players of all backgrounds and experience levels to participate.”

There will be nine competing categories in the tournament spanning from novice divisions to higher level events. Categories include novice doubles, intermediate doubles, open doubles, Masters doubles for 45 and above players and team tournaments.

The tournament is part of a much bigger pickleball boom across Asia with new clubs, courts and competitions popping up at a rapid pace. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing markets in the area, with participation in Malaysia soaring in the last few years.

Besides the competition, organizers are also looking forward to the economic benefits the tournament may provide through sports tourism, which would bring visiting athletes, families and spectators to Kuching over the three-day event.

With worldwide participation already confirmed and registrations continue to increase, the Pickleball Freak Championship 2026 is set to be one of the biggest pickleball gatherings ever organized in Malaysia and a crucial milestone in the sport’s regional expansion.
