With the ODI World Cup 2027 next year, there is some room for experimentation in the T20I matches for the next year or so. With the Asian Games this year, falling simultaneously with an India vs West Indies T20I series, the Men in Blue might look to field two separate teams for the two events playing at the same time. This means that several players would get their chances to debut for India. This has also presented a golden opportunity for India to groom another captain, with Suryakumar Yadav getting older.
According to a report by NDTV, BCCI are planning for two simultaneous teams in T20Is with several assignments overlapping with each other in the future. Hence, a pool of 30-35 players might be looked at starting with the two-match T20I series against Ireland in June. Hence, several new players who have shown promise n the IPL 2026 might be called up for T20I series this year. In fact, the Ireland tour could feature a larger squad travelling.
“The Asian Games and India vs West Indies T20 Series are going to be at the same time. So we have to look at two T20 teams playing. It is important from now to have a pool of 30-35 cricketers who can be called up for International assignments. For the upcoming Ireland tour, like most tours to UK, a bigger pool of players will be kept in the squad. This will extend for the Asian Games.” a BCCI source was quoted by the publication.
Shreyas Iyer To Captain
The report states that Shreyas Iyer is being considered as the captain for the upcoming tour to Ireland. Iyer has proved his worth as a captain in the shortest format, becoming the only captain to win reach IPL finals with three different franchises. He has been sensational this year as well, guiding Punjab Kings to becoming the first team in history to remain unbeaten after the first six games of the tournament.
The other players who front runners for being selected and handed an India debut are Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Priyansh Arya, Anukul Roy, Shashank Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi – all of who had great seasons in the IPL 2026 so far for their respective franchises. Sooryavanshi in particular will be a player to keep an eye on, as he is set to become the youngest player to play for India should he make his debut.
On the other hand, Ayush Badoni might make his T20I debut, after already being called up in the ODI squad earlier this year against New Zealand at home. Rajat Patidar is also in consideration
On the bowling front, Ravi Bishnoi might make his return to the Indian T20I team. He was once the no.1 ranked T20I bowler in the world, but slowly lost his place in the side with the emergence of Varun Chakaravarthy. Khaleel Ahmed is also being considered, provided he gets fit in time after being ruled out of the entirety of the IPL season. Prasidh Krishna is also being considered after consistent wicket-taking performances for Gujarat Titans in 2025 and 2026. Kartik Tyagi is also being considered.
Dhruv Jurel is leading the race t be the wicketkeeper-batter.
