The USA got their FIFA World Cup campaign off to a perfect start with a brilliant 4-1 win over Paraguay. The team was on a roll from the word go and dominated the game for most of the 90-odd minutes. Paraguay got off to the worst possible start as Damián Bobadilla scored an own goal to put USA in the lead. Folarin Balogun tripled the lead with back-to-back goals before half-time.
USA dropped intensity slightly in the second half, trying to protect the advantage. This allowed Paraguay to pull one goal back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio Magalhães Prado. However, the lead they gained before half-time had already sealed the result by then. In the final seconds of the game, Gio Reyna scored with a fine right-footed finish to make it 4-1. This was the first time in history that the USA scored four goals in a FIFA World Cup match.
USA coach Pochettino reacted to the win and said that wins like these are a treat for fans.

“It’s difficult to compare with the past,” said Pochettino, who took over in late 2024. “I don’t know what happened in the past. I think we need to talk about today, because it was a great match. It was amazing for our fans to see, to watch this type of game, and today, I am so proud and we are so proud. I think we are winning a lot of fans, adding fans for the sport here in America.”
