Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially announced that it will host the Indian men’s cricket team for a two-match Test series in August as part of the 2025–2027 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The first Test will take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15–19, while the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo will host the second match of the tour from August 23–27. The start time of both games is 10:00 am IST.
Sri Lanka is now ranked sixth, one spot behind India, who have advanced to the World Test Championship final twice without winning the title. The team cannot afford to make any more mistakes because they have a 5–10% probability of making it to the final the next year.
Shubman Gill-led Side Eyes To Bounce Back
After a hard-fought 2-2 draw in England and a home Test series victory against the West Indies, the Shubman Gill era got off to a good start. A shocking home whitewash at the hands of South Africa last year, however, put an end to that momentum and revealed long-standing worries about India’s batting against strong spin and a lack of comparable power in their own spin department.
The IPL’s flat surfaces and lack of preparation time for Test matches are primarily to blame for the growing prevalence of issues against spin in other formats. In Sri Lanka, where the hosts’ spin-heavy approach is anticipated to put turning pitches to the test, these weaknesses will be put to the test once again.
Indian Head coach Gautam Gambhir will also be under pressure. At the beginning of his tenure, he wasn’t fond of the term ‘transition’, but since then, he has seemed to be friendly with it, arguing that the retirements of players who were phased out, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, will inevitably have an impact.
The last time India went on a Test tour of Sri Lanka was back in 2017, when they won the three-match series by a 3-0 clean sweep.
