Pickleball’s rapid rise across the Caribbean continues to draw larger crowds, international players and growing tourism interest, with Puerto Rico set to host another major event later this month.
The fourth edition of the La Pregunta Tournament will take place from May 28 to 31 at Club Deportivo Del Oeste in Cabo Rojo, expanding to four days for the first time as organizers respond to rising participation numbers.
According to a report by Primera Hora, the tournament has introduced new age-group divisions this year, including 40+ categories and junior competitions in the Under-16 and Under-18 sections.
Daniel Desa, CEO of Pregunta Events, said the additional competition day was added to accommodate the growing number of categories and participants.
The tournament will feature 38 divisions across singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions, ranging from beginner-level 2.5 categories to open divisions.
Singles matches are scheduled for Friday, while men’s and women’s doubles will take place on Saturday. The mixed doubles events will conclude the tournament on Sunday. Saturday’s finals are also expected to be streamed live on the Pregunta Events YouTube channel.
Desa described the tournament as one of the largest pickleball events in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
“We never started with the idea of making it the biggest event, but the best possible within our capabilities as a team,” Desa said, according to the report.
The event is expected to feature a strong international field once again. APP Tour player Bobbi Oshiro, currently ranked among the leading women players on the APP circuit, is set to participate alongside Chile’s Mario Barrientos and Croatian player Lorena Duknic.
More than 50 players are also expected to travel from the United States for the event.
Puerto Rico’s national team members, including Natalia Sánchez, Shandor Gómez, Pedro Maldonado and Ana Paula Morales, will also compete. Former Puerto Rican basketball player José Juan Barea is also expected to attend.
Organizers said registrations are nearing 400 athletes, with hopes of surpassing the 500-player mark achieved in previous editions. Prize money has also increased this year, with a total purse of $30,000 across categories.
Beyond competition, the tournament will include yoga, pilates and bootcamp sessions as part of a broader wellness-focused experience for players and spectators.
The event is also expected to provide a boost to tourism and local businesses in western Puerto Rico. According to organizers, last year’s edition generated an estimated economic impact of nearly $750,000 for the region.
