Why Argentina Want Their Dark Blue Kit For World Cup Semifinal; England Boss Reacts To Superstition

why argentina want their dark blue kit for world cup semifinal; England boss reacts to superstition

The defending champions Argentina have requested permission from FIFA to wear their blue away kit rather than their iconic sky-blue and white shirt when they play England on Tuesday in the 2026 World Cup semifinal in Atlanta. According to Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, Lionel Scaloni’s team has submitted a request ahead of the highly anticipated last-four match, wanting to play in the all-blue jersey they have only worn once in the tournament.

Why Argentina Wants To Wear Dark Blue Kit?

Although the reason for the unique request is unknown, it might serve as a lucky charm because both of their World Cup victories over England occurred while they were wearing dark blue or navy jerseys. One of the most legendary rivalries in world football will continue with the FIFA World Cup 2026 second semifinal.

Argentina advanced with a 3–1 victory against Switzerland to continue their title defense, while England qualified for the final four by defeating Norway in the semifinals.

Thomas Tuchel Reacts To Argentina’s Superstition

England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledges that he would have made the same decision if superstition had played a role in Argentina’s decision to wear their dark blue away jersey for Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final. When questioned about Argentina’s choice, Tuchel acknowledged the importance of these customs in professional athletics.

“I would have done the same if there was any superstition combined with it. So credit to them. I was not aware of that. I have my superstitious routines. I will not tell you because another superstition is that if I tell you, it will not work,” Tuchel told reporters, according to Reuters.

“We have routines that keep you grounded and calm through the day, and that will not change. We have, of course, also our lucky charms, and these things are just normal in high-level sport,” he added.

Diego Maradona scored the controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal and the spectacular solo effort that was eventually named the ‘Goal of the Century’ during Argentina’s historic 2–1 quarterfinal victory over England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup while wearing the dark blue kit. When Argentina eliminated England on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the Round of 16 of the 1998 World Cup, they donned the same navy jersey.
