Adelaide Oval can host a regular-season Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. The IPL games have been played in South Africa and the UAE during elections and Covid 19, and this could be the first time an IPL match could be played in Australia. According to a report in Sen.com, driven by Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and South Australian Cricket Association chief Will Rayner, the discussions with the stakeholders have already taken place.
Reportedly, BCCI is yet to be approached, and a formal proposal could be sent soon. According to the report, the proposal could be part of a reciprocal agreement where a Big Bash League match could be played in Chennai.
The Adelaide Oval authorities are confident that the IPL fixture at the venue will be a huge sell-out given the city’s love for sport. The venue has already hosted some major sporting events in the past, including LIV Golf and the AFL’s Gather Round.
The report states that the match could be played in March, shortly after the Australian football season begins and at the start of the IPL calendar. Reportedly, prominent political and administrative figures, including South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, federal trade minister Don Farrell, and Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird, have been consulted informally. Meanwhile, Tourism South Australia has also expressed early support. However, it must be noted that the discussions are still in an early phase and plenty of approvals still need to be taken.
challenges
The concept is refreshing, but getting BCCI’s nod might be challenging. This is because of the logistical challenges, and the broadcaster might raise concerns. Teams playing at a neutral venue can also be at a slight disadvantage due to the conditions, and since every game stands as of utmost importance, not many teams might agree to play outside India, unless the entire tournament is moved out. All will depend on how BCCI sees the proposal, and if they find beneficial for the tournament.
