India could be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah in at least one format in the series against Afghanistan in June. India, who hasn’t played an international game since the 2026 T20 World Cup final, will host Afghanistan in a one-off Test and 3 ODIs. The red-ball game will be played from June 6 to 10. The three ODIs will take place on June 14, 17 and 20. PTI has reported that Bumrah will play either the red-ball game or the three ODIs.
Bumrah has a history of back issues and his workload is always managed. He hasn’t played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup final. He plays Test cricket and one white-ball format at a time.
Bumrah is expected to miss T20I cricket at least till the 2027 ODI WC. A clear word on Bumrah will be out on May 19, when the selectors name the squads for the series.
The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee will only announce the squad for the Afghanistan series. The squads for the Ireland, England and Zimbabwe tours are expected to be announced later.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma set to return
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to return to international cricket in the series against Afghanistan. The former Indian captains are now only active in ODI cricket and have retired from the other two formats.
They are currently busy with their IPL commitments. After the Afghanistan series, they will travel to England with the ODI team. They retired from T20I cricket after winning the 2024 World Cup trophy. They quit Test cricket in May 2025.
