Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a below-par outing in the IPL 2026 and were knocked out of the playoff race after losing eight out of the 14 matches. MS Dhoni has been synonymous with the CSK since the inception of the league, but he didn’t play a single game this year due to injuries. Dhoni hasn’t given any update on whether he’ll return for the last dance next year, and as has been the case in the last few years, he’ll take a call before the season, depending on his fitness.
But even if MS Dhoni decides to retire, CSK most likely won’t let him leave the franchise, and could possibly offer the coach role. Following CSK’s poor run in IPL 2026, speculations are rife that the franchise might part ways with Stephen Fleming. The former New Zealand captain even addressed the issue after the team’s group stage exit and said that head coaches are judged by results and that the decision will be management’s.
A fan on Ashwin, while responding to the fan, dropped a bombshell and said that CSK don’t need to look for options beyond MS Dhoni.

Tight Race For Final Playoff Berth
RCB, SRH and GT have secured the playoff berth, with RCB and GT occupying the top two slots. RR, KKR and PBKS are in a tight race for the last spot. If RR win their last game, they’ll reach 16 points and qualify. If they lose, and KKR and PBKS win their final game, RR will be knocked out and the team with a better run rate will go through.
