joe root eyes historic milestone, needs 42 runs to match sachin tendulkar's legendary feat

The second Test between England and New Zealand is currently underway at the Kennington Oval in London and is scheduled from June 17 to 21. Joe Root is leading the team in the absence of Ben Stokes. Root will have an opportunity to make history in the second Test of the current three-match home series against the Black Caps. Root, the top run scorer in Test cricket for England, will only be the second player in the world after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the 14000-run mark if he scores at least 48 runs at The Oval.

Root has now amassed 13,952 runs in 300 innings across 164 Test matches. Tendulkar, on the other hand, concluded his 24-year Test career with 15,921 runs in 200 games.

Most Runs In Test Cricket

Sachin Tendulkar: 15921 Runs

Joe Root: 13952 Runs

Ricky Ponting: 13378 Runs

Jacques Kallis: 13289 Runs

Rahul Dravid: 13288 Runs

Root can reach the 14,000-run milestone in his 165th Test, while Tendulkar needed 279 innings and 171 Tests to do so in the longest format of the game.

Joe Root On Verge Of Reaching More Milestones

Root will also have the opportunity to become the world’s first player to achieve 2,000 runs in Test cricket against New Zealand, in addition to becoming just the second player to reach 14,000 runs.

In 22 games against the Black Caps, Root, who made his Test debut in 2012, has amassed 1,934 runs. To reach 2,000, he has to score 66 runs at The Oval.

In all, Root has amassed 3,106 runs in 54 international cricket matches (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is) against New Zealand. He would surpass Ricky Ponting and Virat Kohli to reach second spot among batters with the most runs against the Black Caps across formats if he scores at least 62 runs in the next game.

While Kohli scored 3,167 runs in 73 innings of 60 international matches against the Black Caps, Ponting ended his international career with 3,145 runs in 69 matches against New Zealand.

In international cricket, Tendulkar is the record holder for most runs scored against New Zealand. The renowned Indian batsman scored 3,345 runs in 80 innings while playing in 66 games versus the Kiwis.

In addition, Root leads the list of batsmen with the most runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) as captain. He will become the first player in history to score 3,000 runs in the WTC as captain if he scores at least 165 runs in the second Test against New Zealand.
