Iraq’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2–1 win against Bolivia in the Inter-Confederation qualification final at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer means that all 48 teams that will play in the tournament are now confirmed. The Asian nation’s qualifications mean that nine teams from Asia have qualified, which is the second-most alongside Africa and just behind 16 teams from Europe. The UEFA qualification playoffs saw a major shock on Tuesday (March 31) evening as four-time champions Italy failed to seal their place earlier in the day after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Elsewhere in Europe, Sweden, alongside Turkey and the Czech Republic, sealed their place after beating Poland, Kosovo, and Denmark. Meanwhile, the other intercontinental playoff match saw Bolivia beat Japan.
However, there remains uncertainty around Iran due to ongoing conflict between them and the USA/Israel.
The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The summit clash will take place at the Met Life Stadium in New Jersey.
